When Is the Best Time to Clean Your Roof in Hampshire?

May 2026 · 3 min read

The short answer: late April through early October. Most Hampshire roof cleans we do happen between May and September.

Why That Window?

Three factors:

  • Dry tiles take biocide better. Wet tiles dilute the chemical and shorten the contact time. Dry tile + biocide = better kill rate at the root.
  • Faster drying. After a soft wash, tiles need to dry within a few hours. UK winter humidity often leaves them damp for days — encouraging some regrowth before the biocide takes effect.
  • Safer access. Even with ground-based soft wash, we still use ladders for ridge inspections and gutter clears. Wet, mossy tiles in November are not the place to be.

The October Exception

If you’ve put off cleaning all summer, October is your last reasonable window. Get it done before the autumn leaf drop fills up the gutters. We’ll always pick the leaves out as part of the clean, but doing the roof + gutters together saves you a separate visit later.

When Not to Clean

December to February. Tiles are wet, gutters are full of leaves, and biocide is less effective. We’ll still take winter bookings for urgent jobs (storm damage, insurance work, sale-related cleans) but for routine maintenance, wait until spring.

How Often?

With our 5-year biocide treatment, most Hampshire roofs need cleaning once every 5–7 years. Heavily shaded properties — particularly around Romsey, the New Forest, and the Meon Valley villages — may need attention every 3–4 years.
