Moss Removal Hampshire

Heavy moss isn’t just unsightly — it traps moisture against tiles, blocks gutters, and shortens your roof’s life. We remove it safely and treat the underlying spores so it doesn’t come back for years.

Why Hampshire Has a Moss Problem

Hampshire’s mild, damp climate — particularly across Southampton, the New Forest fringe, and the Meon Valley — is a near-ideal environment for moss growth. Most concrete tiles are visibly affected within 10–15 years, and north-facing or tree-shaded roofs can show heavy moss in under 5.

Beyond the look of it, moss creates real problems:

  • Water retention — moss holds 10× its weight in water, keeping tiles wet between rainfalls.
  • Tile damage — freeze-thaw cycles in wet moss split concrete tiles over time.
  • Gutter blockage — dislodged moss clogs gutters and downpipes, causing overflow and damp.
  • Insurance issues — insurers occasionally flag visibly mossy roofs during damp inspections.

Our Moss Removal Process

  1. Manual scrape — heavy moss is removed by hand using plastic scrapers, never wire brushes or metal.
  2. Soft brush down — loose debris cleared, gutters checked.
  3. Biocide soak — a slow-release algaecide is applied to kill spores at the root.
  4. Soft wash rinse — gentle low-pressure rinse to lift any remaining residue.
  5. 5-year treatment — final biocide coat to prevent regrowth.

Don’t DIY this with a pressure washer. Every year we get calls from Hampshire homeowners who’ve pressure-washed their roof, stripped the protective glaze off the tiles, and now have a roof that looks worse and regrows moss faster than before. Soft wash with biocide is the only method that doesn’t cause secondary damage.

How Much Does Moss Removal Cost?

  • Light moss, small roof: from £320
  • Moderate moss, semi-detached: £480–£720
  • Heavy moss, detached: £700–£1,400

Pricing depends on roof size, access, moss density and tile type. We quote a fixed price in writing — no extras added on the day.

Moss Removal in Eastleigh and Southampton

Eastleigh and Southampton between them account for roughly half our moss-removal jobs. Both have the same problem: dense postwar housing on concrete interlocking tiles, a damp marine-influenced climate, and mature tree cover that shades the north-facing roofs.

  • Eastleigh (SO50, SO53) — Boyatt Wood, Hiltingbury, Chandler’s Ford, Bishopstoke, Fair Oak and Velmore. Mostly Marley Modern and Redland 49 concrete tiles, typically 8–15 years between cleans before regrowth becomes visible from the road.
  • Southampton (SO15, SO16, SO18, SO19) — Bitterne, Sholing, Shirley, Bassett, Lordswood and Portswood. Heavy coastal moisture means moss takes hold faster here than inland; we typically recommend a 5–7 year clean cycle vs the 10+ years you can get away with further inland.
  • Surrounding villages — Romsey, Hedge End, West End, Bursledon, Botley, Otterbourne and Colden Common all fall comfortably in our coverage radius.

Pricing for moss removal in Eastleigh and Southampton typically lands between £380 and £850 for a standard residential roof, depending on moss density and tile size. Larger detached properties in Bassett, Lordswood, Chandler’s Ford and Hiltingbury can reach £1,200 where the moss has been left untreated for 10+ years.

See our dedicated Eastleigh and Southampton pages for area-specific information.

When to Call

If you can see green or black streaks from the road, your roof is overdue. Heavy moss visible from ground level usually means 5+ years of build-up. Letting it run further accelerates tile damage and pushes the eventual repair cost up.
